When you have acne-prone skin, choosing the right non-comedogenic make-up is essential to avoid triggering breakouts. I’m meticulous — almost militant — about my skincare routine in the pursuit of clearer skin: every cleanser, serum and SPF is rigorously vetted and patch-tested before earning a spot on my shelf. But during a recent facial with celebrity aesthetician Sofie Pavitt, I was surprised to learn that my complexion could still be compromised — this time, by the very make-up I trusted most.

Celebrity make-up artist Andrea Ventura is in agreement: “It’s critical to avoid pore-clogging make-up, especially if you have sensitive, oily or acne-prone skin. For those with any of these skin types, using make-up with comedogenic ingredients ultimately traps bacteria and oil in pores, and when our pores are clogged, we suffer more breakouts.”

Vogue’s non-comedogenic make-up picks

Rather than cross my fingers whenever I try a new powder blush or foundation, I decided to take control. Call it my beauty bag reckoning — a spring clean guided by acne-safe ingredient lists and comedogenic ratings. Inspired by Pavitt’s advice of avoiding all comedogenic ingredients while on a skin-clearing protocol, I took to scanning every label with the scrutiny of a chemist, purging anything that didn’t pass the acne-safe test. “Why risk it? Minimise the risk of pore-clogging from triggers, and your skin will clear faster,” Pavitt previously told Vogue, and the same concept can be applied to cosmetics.

One word of warning: while many brands claim their products are non-comedogenic, don’t take the label at face value. I’ve made a habit (or perhaps, obsession) of pasting ingredient lists into Sofie Pavitt’s pore-clogging checker — and let’s just say it’s exposed more than a few imposters. The result? A tighter, more intentional edit of colour cosmetics. My clean-out focused strictly on complexion products — foundation, concealer, powders — while eyes, lips and brows got a free pass as I’m not acne-prone in those areas.

Another bonus point? “Non-comedogenic make-up tends to be lightweight because they don’t use pore-clogging ingredients, like heavy oils,” adds Lizzo’s make-up artist Alexx Mayo. You might think non-comedogenic make-up lives in a clinical corner of the beauty world, but it’s surprisingly mainstream. From clean-girl staples like Saie (a go-to for Mayo) to timeless icons from Chanel, truly acne-safe options are easier to find than you’d expect.

Below, find the 10 non-comedogenic products that made the cut — each tested through months of trial, error and close-up mirror moments (a gift from my face to yours).

This cult-favourite is loved for a reason: it creates a lightweight, non-sticky film that locks make-up in place for up to 16 hours, acting like a protective shield against smudging, fading or melting. Use it to prime, set or refresh throughout the day with a few spritzes — or, if you’re anything like me, go full face-drench for that extra insurance.

Everything You Need To Know

What is non-comedogenic make-up?

“Non-comedogenic make-up is specifically formulated to exclude common ingredients that clog pores, lessening the risk of breakouts,” says Ventura. While the term perhaps sounds a bit clinical, the long and short of it is that comedogenic ingredients, in small or large quantities, are no friend to acne-prone skin types.

Common comedogenic ingredients to avoid

When it comes to acne-prone skin, certain ingredients are best avoided — and Pavitt doesn’t mince her words. At the top of her list of common offenders? Shea butter and anything derived from coconut, including coconut alkanes, both of which are known to be highly comedogenic. Experts also caution against ingredients like stearic acid and limonene, which can contribute to clogged pores. Rich, heavy oils — such as marula oil — can be equally problematic for sensitive complexions. Ventura echoes these concerns and adds a few more red flags to the mix. “Sensitive and acne-prone skin should avoid alcohol-based products,” she explains. “Contrary to popular belief, alcohol doesn’t remove oil — it actually tricks the skin into overproducing it. That excess sebum can build up over time and lead to clogged pores.”
