Best non-greasy vitamin C serum: Augustinus Bader The Vitamin C Serum
Augustinus Bader
The Vitamin C Serum
- Key ingredients: Vitamin C, ergothioneine and Advanced TFC8
- Benefits: has a gel-like texture that layers seamlessly in your skincare routine without feeling oily
- Best for: non-greasy vitamin C serum
- How to apply: A little goes a long way, and lasts surprisingly long
- Size: 30ml
Why it’s Vogue-approved: I have used a wide variety of vitamin C serums over the years and typically find them to be greasy and challenging to layer with other products or under make-up. This is not the case with Augustinus Bader's The Vitamin C Serum. The lightweight, gel-like texture quickly absorbs without leaving behind a residue or causing cosmetics that follow to pill or ball. The fragrance-free formula is not oily and is free from the likes of silicones and parabens, which makes it easily tolerated by those with sensitive and blemish-prone skin.
It sets the named ingredient alongside ergothioneine to enhance its effects, niacinamide to support the skin barrier, algae evening complex to calm redness, and the signature Augustinus Bader TFC8 technology for cell renewal and to maximise the absorption of the aforementioned. The impact is immediate; skin is glowy and protected from oxidative stress, but the results are long-lasting too.
Best for antioxidant protection: Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced Vitamin C Gel-Serum
Medik8
C-Tetra Advanced Vitamin C Gel-Serum
- Why it’s Vogue-approved: If you’re already a fan of Medik8’s range of vitamin C serums, you’ll love the latest addition to the roster. While it offers a punchy dose of stabilised vitamin C (20 per cent in this case), the real secret to its efficacy lies in the adjoining ingredients. While acetyl zingerone, an omni antioxidant with hefty studies that it protects against London pollution, delivers further protection against free radicals (as well as enhancing the vitamin C), it’s the inclusion of phtyo-exosomes that’s exciting. Chosen because they pose zero skin barrier disruption, they work hard to ensure the formula is highly tolerated and able to get to where it needs to go without issue.
- Key ingredients: vitamin C, acetyl zingerone, phyto exosomes
- Best for: Unlike the brand’s C-Tetra Luxe serum, which is more of an oil-based serum, anyone who prefers a lighter, more milky formula will adore this. It sinks in instantly and provides a great base for make-up too. Designed for hyperpigmentation, dull and sensitive skin
- Benefits: Brightening, hydrating, firming, smoothing
- How to apply: two to three pumps every morning
- Size: 30 ml
Best protective: Allies of Skin 35% Vitamin C Perfecting Serum
Allies Of Skin
35% Vitamin C Perfecting Serum
- Key ingredients: 25 per cent ethylated l-ascorbic acid, 10 per cent tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, superoxide dismutase, glutathione
- Benefits: Brightening, firming
- Best for: Dull skin, mature skin, all skin types
- How to apply: According to Allies of Skin, apply three pumps to the face and neck to damp skin, post-cleanser and toner. This can be used morning or night.
- Size: 30 ml
Why it’s Vogue-approved: “Do not be fooled by the name as it is a combination of ethylated ascorbic acid as well as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate,” explains Idriss. “The ethylated L-ascorbic (in this serum) is a pure form of vitamin C and one of the most proven forms. The tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is the stable oil-soluble form of vitamin C that also penetrates your skin to help brighten and provide radical protection.” Essentially, this serum works to protect your skin from stress, pollution, and even lack of sleep.

Through a blend of 20% stabilised vitamin C, Japanese Beautyberry, 10% fruit-derived AHAs, and Japanese Angelica root, this elixir protects against free radicals and combats hyperpigmentation to reveal a radiantly glowing complexion.

Why it’s Vogue-approved: Take vitamin C and pair it with the body’s own super antioxidant glutathione, and you have a very good serum for optimal skin health. The buzzy ingredient is known for its ability to neutralise free radicals (aka the molecules in pollution that damage your skin) as well as lighten dark marks, reduce wrinkle formation and boost skin’s elasticity overall. The kind of serum that has a consistency closer to a lightweight cream, this stabilised formula is not only a pleasure to apply – it’s also one you can count on for clearer, plumper skin.

FAQs
What does a vitamin C serum do?
The beauty of a good vitamin C serum is not just how powerful it is, but that it can help with a range of different issues. “Vitamin C and its derivatives reduce tyrosinase activity, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin, thereby lightening hyperpigmentation,” explains dermatologist Dr Azadeh Shirazi. “It also enhances protection against UV rays that stimulate melanin production.” Its status as a powerful antioxidant also means it works on premature ageing. “Vitamin C neutralises free radicals that lead to premature skin ageing, thereby helping support skin structures,” says Shirazi, adding that it is “important for collagen biosynthesis, an important structural protein our skin loses with age.”
What should I look for in a vitamin C serum?
Generally speaking, you’re looking for a formula with a stable form of vitamin C that can deliver sufficient antioxidant protection, such as L-ascorbic acid or tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Experts say you’re typically looking for a vitamin C in the 10-20 per cent range. Dr Paula Bourelly, meanwhile, recommends products with ingredients like arbutin and ubiquinone, as they both have “brightening properties which help to lighten brown spots and, as antioxidants, the ascorbic acid and tocopherol add another layer of defence to traditional sunscreens.”
How should I use a vitamin C serum?
Mims adds that there’s not necessarily a right or wrong way when it comes to applying the serum – what’s more important is what you do afterwards. “Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental factors such as pollution and UV light. So whether you’re deciding to use your serum in the morning, evening, or both, it’s important you’re following up with a layer of broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.”
Is vitamin C serum safe for sensitive skin?
Vitamin C is safe for sensitive skin, but some formulas may cause more irritation than others. If you have particularly sensitive skin, look for a product that contains other ingredients that help minimise barrier disruption, as well as formulas that use encapsulated vitamin C. That means the active is enclosed within a protective shell, usually made of lipids or polymers, to enhance its stability and improve delivery to the skin.
Can I use vitamin C with retinol or niacinamide?
You can use vitamin C with both retinol and niacinamide, but it’s best to use vitamin C and retinol at different times of the day to avoid potential irritation. Most experts recommend using vitamin C in the morning, thanks to its protective antioxidant properties, while retinol, which can increase sun sensitivity, is usually used at night. Niacinamide can be used both morning and night.
How do I store a vitamin C serum?
First up, look at the product you’re buying, as the product’s packaging makes all the difference. Dark or opaque bottles help reduce the oxidation that could occur when vitamin C gets exposed to sunlight or heat. Your precious formula is best stored in a cool, dark environment for best usage.
