There’s no doubt that longevity has become a buzzword in the beauty and wellness industries of late. While figures such as health entrepreneur Brian Johnson and his life-lengthening Blueprint Protocol continue to fascinate, Google searches for “longevity” tripled in 2025. With a focus on healthy ageing and even reversing biological age through the use of diet, supplements, technology and biohacking systems, longevity is essentially the pursuit of living a longer and healthier life.
Vogue’s pick of the best products for skin longevity at a glance:
While that makes sense, it can feel overwhelming to try and implement everything all at once. A simpler and effective way to begin your own longevity programme is to start with one element, like your skin health. But, Fatma Shaheen, skin expert and founder of Skin Design, says it’s important to understand that skin longevity and anti-ageing are not the same thing. “It is not about looking younger,” explains Shaheen. “It is about your skin continuing to function well, repairing itself, holding moisture, staying resilient. We have been conditioned to think about anti-ageing as a battle. I prefer to think of it as intelligent maintenance. Skin that ages well is skin that has been consistently supported, not depleted.”
To help you understand everything you need to know about skin longevity, how to achieve it for yourself and the products to use on your journey, we enlisted some expert help. Read on to discover Vogue’s guide to skin longevity.

What do we mean when we talk about skin longevity?
“Skin longevity is really about how well your skin functions over time,” explains Dr Nichola Conlon, molecular biologist, longevity expert and Dove hair and skin expert. “It’s not just about how it looks in the moment, but how resilient it remains as the years go on.”
How does the concept of overall cellular longevity fit into the idea of skin longevity?
“At a deeper level, skin longevity is a reflection of cellular longevity,” says Conlon. “Everything to do with ageing starts at the cellular level, and when our cells function better and can repair and renew, that’s what ultimately shows up as healthier, more resilient skin on the surface.”
How much is nature vs nurture?
“There’s always a balance between intrinsic ageing – meaning what’s biologically programmed and extrinsic factors like sun exposure, pollution and lifestyle,” explains Conlon, while Shaheen goes on to say, “About 20 per cent is genetic. The other 80 per cent is yours to influence, and that figure still surprises people. UV damage alone accounts for the majority of visible premature ageing. The rest comes down to inflammation, diet, sleep and stress. Intrinsic ageing happens regardless, but how fast and how visibly it shows is largely within your control.”
Can you take a longevity approach alongside natural ageing?
The two aren’t mutually exclusive, so natural ageing and a longevity approach absolutely go hand in hand. “It does not mean stopping the clock,” says Shaheen. “It means your skin stays structurally sound, collagen density maintained, barrier intact, tone even. The lines that come with a life lived are not the enemy. What we are trying to prevent is skin that becomes thin, reactive, or functionally compromised before it needs to.”
Is longevity possible for every skin type?
The good news is that longevity as a concept isn’t determined by any particular feature or skin type. It’s more of a holistic approach that can be applied to any skin of any type, age or colour. “Skin longevity isn’t about achieving perfection or stopping ageing, it’s about supporting your skin to function at its best for as long as possible,” says Conlon. “That’s relevant for everyone, regardless of age or skin type, because we’re working with the biology we already have.”
What habits should we all start if we want to improve skin longevity?
“In the context of natural ageing, we’re starting to understand that the health of our skin reflects more than just what we see on the surface; it’s connected to how we age across the body as a whole,” advises Conlon. “The skin is our largest organ and a key interface with the environment, so when it’s compromised, it can contribute to wider biological stress and inflammation across the body. This means looking after our skin is no longer just vanity; it’s about supporting the overall health and resilience of the entire body. That’s why it’s encouraging to see more focus on caring for the skin across the whole body, not just the face.”
What products are essential?
According to Conlon, it’s important to get the basics right. “The fundamentals are still incredibly powerful, for example, supporting the skin barrier, maintaining hydration and protecting against daily stressors.” Shaheen notes, “SPF every day, non-negotiable and layer a vitamin C serum underneath it. Vitamin C in the morning, SPF on top. That is your defence established. For cellular renewal, a retinoid in the evening and peptides for structural integrity.”
Can we improve the longevity of the skin on our bodies, too?
The good news is, yes. Start simple and look for a good moisturiser that uses well-known, properly researched ingredients that are proven to work. Formulations like Dove’s Body Serums combine high-performance ingredients such as niacinamide with barrier-supporting technologies, work alongside the skin’s biology to extend that level of care to where it’s often been overlooked.
