Congratulations are in order for Zoë Kravitz and Harry Styles, who are engaged after eight months of dating. These days, it’s tradition for a newly minted bride-to-be to get a manicure – all the better when showing off a new ring, on Insta or in person. Popular choices include French tips, wedding-ready ballerina pink-polish, or thin coats of shimmer set against a nude base. Kravitz, who is famous for her effortless personal style, chose the “naked manicure”, leaving her nails polish-free.
While on a morning stroll through New York City, the Caught Stealing star was pictured with her diamond ring glinting on her wedding finger, and her natural nails filed into an almond shape. While bare, her nails had a healthy shine, which is usually achieved with a professional buffing tool. The naked manicure is considered the foundational step in caring for your nails. First, cuticles are adequately prepped, then nails are filed down into the desired shape. The final step is to buff, for a glossy finish. For those who can’t bear the thought of parting with polish altogether, a strengthening base coat can be applied at the start, and followed with a clear top coat at the end.
Last year saw a rise in the number of stars choosing to go polish-free for even the most formal red-carpet occasions, like Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicola Peltz. Sometimes – as Kravitz, a celebrated minimalist, will no doubt agree – less really is more.
