Millennial sensibilities take many different forms: an over-reliance on GIFs, a penchant for winged eyeliner and a red lip, and of course, a predisposition towards strange, often impractical items of clothing. Think peplum tops and waterfall skirts for sticky-carpeted clubs, or for the office, the bolero jacket – a style long ago consigned to the millennial scrapheap, but that has apparently now caught the eye of a certain Millie Bobby Brown.
Despite being decidedly Gen Z herself, Millie seems to have swerved the world of Starface stickers and disposable vapes in favour of a more traditional route: she married Jake Bongiovi last year and they adopted a baby girl a few months later. Perhaps, then, it’s no surprise to see her pivot straight to millennial fashion classics. Case in point: the khaki bolero she wore to the Netflix Upfront presentation on Wednesday night, paired with a white corset and skirt set by Georges Hobeika.
It remains to be seen whether Brown’s endorsement of the bolero, which Vogue’s own Daniel Rodgers once described as “less a cardigan and more a pair of disembodied sleeves”, will contribute to the piece getting its own Y2K revival, like going out tops and Miss Sixty low-risers before it.
